Designed with Buckin' Billy Ray Smith through decades of wood splitting experience.

Weighing in at a hefty 5 pounds, the Wood Bullet is the heaviest axe in our lineup. The blade of the Wood Bullet is forged in a convex cross-section to pop wood apart and aid in releasing the axe from a log. Its extra long poll not only adds more balance to the axe head but also lends itself well to be used with a flicking technique when splitting. Everything from the geometry of the head to the palm swell on the premium 31" hickory handle was designed and built with wood splitting in mind.

Best little axe I own!

This is my 3rd Hoffman axe. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it's exactly what I needed. I prefer a small hatchet for fire making chores. Can't wait to take this little beauty on my next adventure! Fit and finish are flawless of course! Best axes period!

It’s good

It’s good. Not as thick as my old Filson belt, but it’s good.

The best there is

Bottom line up front this is the best splitting axe that ever was, is and maybe ever will be.

I've tried around 50 different axe patterns, and the Wood Bullet beats them all. You can find vintage axes with good profiles for splitting, but finding one with the right profile, a clean eye, an undamaged toe, a big heavy (and undamaged) poll and a long, full bit will not be easy or cheap. Add to that the work you'll have to do fixing it up and hanging it and the price of the Wood Bullet isn't so daunting anymore.

The secret to the Wood Bullet's performance isn't just the edge geometry, it's also the big, heavy poll. It flicks better and swings truer than anything else I've tried. The balance that poll provides also seems to make it less jarring on your elbows when you flick it if you don't let go fast enough. The shape is perfect, with a nice flat top that won't catch rocks while you split on the ground and a wide bit that makes it easy to hit what you're aiming for, and the handle shape has quickly become my favorite as well.

All in all it's my new go-to splitting axe. I might bring other tools to play around with, but when the wood is gnarly or time is of the essence the Wood Bullet is the tool I reach for.

Craftsmanship meets Functionality

I’ve watched Buckin build and test this axe until he was finally satisfied with the final product. He could not have found a better Blacksmith to build this amazing tool! Not only is this the finest working axe I’ve ever used, but the look and fit are impressive. You get what you pay for, a tool that will last a lifetime. Well done Hoffman Blacksmithing!!

Amazing Splitting axe!

Amazing Splitting axe! Had to wait almost a year, and it was well worth the wait! The handle is perfect for me, I’m 6’-1”, and the back doesn’t bother me as much with this axe.
It’s such a nice looking combination, I made a spot to hang it in the cabin, so I have art and a firewood tool combo!

Second axe…ordered

Placed an order of an in stock axe. This is my second Hoffman axe and it’s just as good as the first. The first was made in NC. Second made in TN. Perfectly packed and I’m very happy with the axe. Axe came with no flaws. Fast shipping since it was in stock.

This is a truly special and unique axe

This is a truly special and unique axe. I have been a blade and ax connoisseur for over 20 years with over a dozen high-end axes in my collection that I periodically switch out when I am processing firewood for my Homestead.

This “Wood Bullet” Axe stands out from the rest with its late 19th century design that is all but gone in modern offerings, this pattern head is a especially effective & time tested from when it’s user relied on a proven design in order to heat their home properly.

I had my axe stamped with the date of manufacturer so I can look back and remember when I waited over 18 months to receive this amazing wood bullet axe.

Worth the investment if you enjoy / need to process firewood with a tool that will last a lifetime & beyond.

Wood Bullet performance

I just had a chance to try out my new wood bullet. I am very impressed with the workmanship and quality of the axe. I need a splitting axe to break down large rounds of Red Oak, Hickory. Wild Cherry and Walnut so I am able to pick them up to split them on my hydraulic splitter. Many of these rounds are 24 inches in diameter and first must be split with socket wedges and a sledge hammer. Unfortunately the wood bullet is not up to this task. The head is not heavy enough nor is the handle ridged enough to power through this tough wood. I am using an Adler Super Splitter maul with a 6.2 pound head and a thick ridged handle to get the job done.
Please don't take this as a negative review the Wood Bullet is just not the proper tool for the job I am doing, and I am sure it preforms well in smaller softer straight grain woods. I will be giving 5 stars for the quality and craftsmanship of the Wood Bullet.
Best Regards, Craig Collins
