Our axes are hand forged from a block of 4142 chrome/moly alloy steel in the Blue Ridge mountains on the Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee line and heat treated to 55.5 HRC. The heads are hung on straight grained hickory handles made from cabinet grade kiln dried lumber*. Each handle is hand fitted with a drawknife. The poll is hardened to be used as a proper hammer.
This compact 1.5 pound head brings great versatility to the table with its bearded blade and hammer head poll. A bearded blade allows for choking up behind the edge, providing greater control for finer tasks. The beard also allows for a wider blade on a lighter head. A hardened hammer head makes this axe balanced and more suitable for hammering nails, posts, pegs and stakes than other axes in its same weight class, like our Mini Camper. This axe bridges the gap between our Bearded Belt Carry Hatchet and our Trapper’s Hatchet. The Mountaineer has a straight 15.5" handle for greater hammer control. Every Mountaineer comes standard with a leather sheath and built-in fire starter made by Überleben, allowing you to start a fire everywhere your axe goes.
Sheaths are hand made with thick vegetable tanned water buffalo leather. 100% made in house. Overbuilt and ready to use, because overkill never fails.
